9 Firebirds Earn All NY CHSAA Honors Including 5 Finalists

Picture
Senior Marty Jensen's thrilling come from behind overtime victory in the championship match was the highlight of the weekend as the Firebird Family placed 9 wrestlers including 5 finalists. Marty used a single leg and an All American finish on opponent Mike Gruttolori of St. Francis for the takedown and the win in the Overtime period. Fellow Seniors Jason Javier, Max Tricolla, Josh Newman, & Mike Cannon capped storied careers with appearances in the finals. Jason Javier dominated his way to the finals including a convincing win over a very tough Joe Lanciotti of St. John the Baptist in the semis before falling to Tito Colom of St. Francis. Max Tricolla cruised to the finals earning bonus points in each of his wins before falling in the finals to Hector Colom of St. Francis. Josh Newman overpowered all his opponents with ease until falling to Thomas Schulze of Archbishop Stepinac, Mike Cannon had arguably the most exciting match of the entire tournament when he faced off in a rematch of the League Chmapionship against Colsom Meadows of St. Anthony's in the quarterfinals. Mike scored a 2 point takedown as time expired to end the action packed match and advance in the tournament, Mike would eventually fall in the finals to Justin Morel of Mount St. Michael.

Family dinner to end a great season.
Freshman Nate Mompoint advanced to the semifinals of the 106 lbs. Weight class before falling to Zach Wagner of Chaminade. Unfortunately due to injury Nate would not be able to wrestle back and had to medical default to 6th place. Nate's accomplishments as a Freshman put him in the conversation as one of the best Freshman campaigns the Firebirds have ever seen. Sophomore Sean Coakley placed 3rd in a very tough weight class, by placing for the 2nd year in a row Sean is on track to earn the prestigious ironman award ( Placement all 4 years). Seniors Johnny Ryan & Leonidas Papadopoulos also capped off their careers with trips to the medal stand. Johnny Ryan advanced to the semis at 220 lbs. losing close 1-0 match, he would place 4th in the tournament for the 2nd year in a row. Leonidas put together an impressive weekend placing 5th in a very competitive 195 lbs. Weight class. Antonio Pagnotta, Anthony Lucente, Frankie Hug, Connor McDonald, & Nasser Gonzalez all wrestled as well for the team this past weekend.

It all starts with a great group of parents.
The team were also recipients of the NY CHSAA Sportsmanship award for the 3rd year in a row! It was incredible to watch as all the different wrestlers, parents, siblings, & alumni supported and cared about every wrestlers match like it was their own, nobody wrestled a match without the full support of the entire Firebird Wrestling Family, this senior class bonded the program as close as it has ever been. It was tough to tell who's son or brother actually won or lost the match because of the incredible support each wrestler was given by the families. Also a special shoutout to all the alumni who came back to share some wisdom, show some support, and give back to the current wrestlers like they received when they were wrestling. More than any success on the mat the coaching staff is grateful to have such an amazing family to share all the experiences with! Special thanks to Alessandra Javier for all the amazing pictures this year.

What family is all about, Pat Skinner '12 passes some knowledge onto Jason Javier '16 who passes it on to Nate Mompoint '19 and then Pat and Nate talk. The past, the present, and the future all together; a tradition of great lightweights continues for Kellenberg Wrestling.
